Common Mistakes
  1. Using all upper case or lower case in entering your information. Review committees prefer to review applicant information in proper mixed case (e.g. Joe Smith, not JOE SMITH or joe smith)
  2. Not listing all former names under personal information. Failure to do so will result in a delay in matching your documents with your application.
  3. Forgetting to upload your Statement of Purpose to your designated institutions. After your statement is written, you must return to the application checklist, click on institution designations, and add your statement of purpose to your desired designations.
  4. Omitting coursework. You must enter ALL U.S. coursework completed on your application. Omitted coursework will result in delays processing your application.
  5. Omitting colleges or universities attended. List all colleges and universities you have attended, including study abroad institutions and AP sessions while you were in high school. SOPHAS also needs official transcripts from all U.S. colleges and universities attended.
  6. Not checking the back of your transcripts for credit conversion ratios (e.g. 1 credit = 4 semester hours). Failure to correctly enter coursework may result in a delay in processing your application.
  7. Copying someone else's written work for the statement of purpose. Your statement of purpose should be completely original. Write in your own words and check carefully for grammatical errors before submitting your application.
  8. Waiting for your standardized test scores, recommendations or other documents to be received by SOPHAS before submitting your application. Submit your application as soon as you have entered all required information. Documents, recommendations and test scores will be added to your application after they are received. The instituions can see your application as soon as you e-submit it and may wish to begin processing your application right away.
  9. Expecting your application to be complete as soon as it is submitted. An application is considered complete when it is submitted, paid, and SOPHAS has received all US transcripts and at least TWO letters of recommendation.
  10. Sending U. S. transcripts marked “Student Copy” to SOPHAS . SOPHAS cannot accept student copies of transcripts. You should notify your registrar that you need an official copy sent to SOPHAS. A request form can be found in SOPHAS in the Colleges and Universities section.
  11. Not checking your status. Once you submit, you should monitor your status in the “my status” section often to ensure all required documents are received and your application is being processed. SOPHAS will e-mail you if there is an issue with documents or coursework verification but about missing documents. Check your status often until you application is complete.
